Page Set Dynamic Extension Question

Hi MQListers,
MQV 7.1 info states that a pageset can be extended up to a maximum of 119 times.
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/?lang=en#!/SSFKSJ_7.1.0/com.ibm.mq.doc/zc12670_.htm

However, today I found a pageset that had been extended 124 times. Is this an error in the doc, or is my MQ monitoring software (MainView) reporting this incorrectly?

Regards – Grant.

I think the confusion is between VSAM and MQ Page Set.

VSAM itself can span a lot of extents today. 119 extents was the old limitation.

I did find this

The extents can span volumes if the linear data set is defined in this way, however, WebSphere MQ cannot expand the page sets beyond 64 GB

I would do a LISTC on the page set VSAM dataset name and look at the HARBA and HURBA values and make sure they are within the 64GB range if that is still a restriction. Maybe Mainview is reporting based on that. Also see how many extents the page set is using. ISPF 3.4 can show you the number of extents as well.

MQ allows for 123 expansion on a PSID. I think that count is independent
from the VSAM limits.

Where do you see the 124 number?

Look at message CSQP013I :

CSQP013I: csect-name NEW EXTENT CREATED FOR PAGE SET psid. NEW EXTENT WILL
NOW BE FORMATTED

Explanation

Page set psid has been successfully dynamically expanded by creating a new
extent.
Severity

0
System action

The new extent is formatted; message CSQI031I will be issued when
formatting completes successfully.
System programmer response

The page set can only be expanded 123 times. After this you will have to
reallocate the page set using larger primary and secondary extents. For
information about managing page sets, see Managing page sets

Is there any way to tell who and how a queue was cleared? We also have the BMC middleware management tool (formerly QPASA) and MQ Explorer.

TIA,

I'm guessing you'd need to have event monitoring activated on the
queuemanager for this to be visible .

Hi Bill,

if you talk about the MQSC command CLEAR QLOCAL:
yes, it can be found in the log datasets.

Just select the appropriate log by utility CSQ1LOGP detail report:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSFKSJ_7.1.0/com.ibm.mq.doc/za14150_.htm
I think it will be found in DDNAME CSQOBJS.

We once found out an errant utility job in this way (with help by IBM
support).

Regards Norbert

For nonstriped VSAM data sets, you can specify in the SMS data class parameter whether to use primary or secondary allocation
amounts when extending to a new volume. You can expand the space for a nonstriped VSAM component to 255 extents.

For SMS-managed VSAM data sets, this extent limit is removed if Extent Constraint Removal is specified in the Data Class.
The theoretical limit is then the maximum number of volumes (59), times 123 extents per volume, or 7257 extents.

Also beware of “VSAM Extent Consolidation”
