All,

As mentioned on my blog ( http://www.capitalware.com/rl_blog/ ), IBM
has announced/released IBM MQ V8:
http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/ShowDoc.wss?docURL=/common/ssi/rep_ca/7/897/ENUS214-177/index.html&lang=en&request_locale=en

Thanks for forwarding that Roger.

There's some welcome improvements there, not least the ldap support (but still no Kerberos unfortunately).

Does anyone know what MQ Light is? This is mentioned in the statement of direction for future MQ releases. Seems to be following the same route as MQTT support on MQ? But looks like a completely new API.

Hi Ian

MQLight is a number of things in the area of making messaging application
development easier, particularly for newcomers - it's in open Alpha at the
moment so the easiest way to find out more is to hit the website:

https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/

I believe the statement of intent is to the effect that the new API likely
to be involved will be fully supported in MQ in the longer term.

Hope that helps

Anthony Thanks.
I found that link but it didn't seem to say what MQ Light was based on. Guessing it might be AMQP I did a google search and appears that's what it is.
So will MQ Light be interoperable with other AMQP providers such as RabbitMQ? And conversely if and when this is supported within a QMgr (through MQ Light Channel perhaps?), would that imply other AMQP clients would be able to connect directly to MQ? I guess that last one may require gazing into a crystal ball. :)

This was the first time I heard the term MQ Light so was interested to know what it was.

Thanks,
Ian

The new client API is indeed AMQP based (I'm guessing you may have found
Rob Nicholson's explanation here
https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/2014/02/14/mq-light-wire-protocol/ ) - I
think the honest answer to both of those questions is that nothing is set
in stone yet, but if those kinds of interoperability do come (and I don't
have the crystal ball either) they probably won't be a high priority vs.
getting an easy to use product and API out there in the short term - hence
the current Alpha.

However, I'm not actually part of the team working on this directly - I'll
encourage the folk who are to come and chip in (I know Rob is planning to)
but in the meantime they're very keen to get any feedback and input - the
forum here is probably a good way of getting in touch if you have more
questions or thoughts:

Really
MQ Light now! Based on AMQP
great an open source effort that was considered failed in 2008.

http://www.imatix.com/articles:whats-wrong-with-amqp/

So MQ Light an IBM product based on an open source developed product, MQTT an open source product based on an IBM developed product (a la Eclipse), oh don’t forget good old WMQe
wasn’t that the original MQ everywhere?

Seems the expression, “The bloom is off the rose.” applies
 way off.

George,
I’m not saying your prediction for MQ Light is not ultimately going to come true, but I did notice that link you sent was written by the founder of *cough* zeroMQ, so read into that what you will. I think the AMQP still has legs and was created initially as a cooperative effort by the big banks so it is in use at least in that market. It seems RabbitMQ is still the major implementation, so I guess this is IBM’s attempt to put a product out there based on the protocol.

Ah the memory of MQEveryplace brings tears to my eyes
.but then so do onions. MQTT ultimately replaced that and I think has a great future.

But taking the spirit of your point, I think IBM needs to do some positioning to make clear where they see this versus MQ, MQTT and other open source products out there. Open source messaging is here to stay but backing the winners is harder to do. By choosing the name MQ Light I guess it may be being positioned in part with their Worklight offering in mind, but that is in the mobile space where MQTT is strong. Reading the homepage it mentions a use case of offloading work in a web application. I think the picture is not clear at the moment but hopefully someone from the MQ light team will be along shortly.

Just my thoughts and staying open minded.

Ian

MQ Light now! Based on AMQP
great an open source effort that was considered failed in 2008.
http://www.imatix.com/articles:whats-wrong-with-amqp/

So MQ Light an IBM product based on an open source developed product, MQTT an open source product based on an IBM developed product (a la Eclipse), oh don’t forget good old WMQe
wasn’t that the original MQ everywhere?

Seems the expression, “The bloom is off the rose.” applies
 way off.

The new client API is indeed AMQP based (I'm guessing you may have found Rob Nicholson's explanation here https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/2014/02/14/mq-light-wire-protocol/ ) - I think the honest answer to both of those questions is that nothing is set in stone yet, but if those kinds of interoperability do come (and I don't have the crystal ball either) they probably won't be a high priority vs. getting an easy to use product and API out there in the short term - hence the current Alpha.

However, I'm not actually part of the team working on this directly - I'll encourage the folk who are to come and chip in (I know Rob is planning to) but in the meantime they're very keen to get any feedback and input - the forum here is probably a good way of getting in touch if you have more questions or thoughts:

So will MQ Light be interoperable with other AMQP providers such as RabbitMQ? And conversely if and when this is supported within a QMgr (through MQ Light Channel perhaps?), would that imply other AMQP clients would be able to connect directly to MQ? I guess that last one may require gazing into a crystal ball. ☺

At a recent IBM event I asked the panel a question about this. As we now have a plethora of messaging APIs and systems to choose from (classic MQ, MQTT, MQTT-WebSockets, MQ LLM and now MQ Light) what is IBM’s messaging strategy? The answer was that these are all pitched at different use cases and requirements although clearly there is a great deal of overlap – e.g. MQTT using WebSockets vs MQ Light for example.

Personally I think it’s a tough one – IBM needs to provide the right tools for the job but at the same time if there are too many alternatives the user risks backing the wrong horse, with MQe, AMI etc examples of this.

The Apple model (one size fits all) or the Samsung model (put out enough variations and you’ll find something you like)? Or how about overlaying JMS/XMS over top of all of these “transports”?

Also I think the Open source nature of some of these is irrelevant. As has been discussed here in the past Open Source in industry is only useful with paid support. The products need to be chosen on their merits rather than the perceived license cost savings.

Did they also announce an end of support for V75 ?

Subject: Re: IBM MQ V8 Announced/Released

George,
I’m not saying your prediction for MQ Light is not ultimately going to come true, but I did notice that link you sent was written by the founder of *cough* zeroMQ, so read into that what you will.

Ian

Really
MQ Light now! Based on AMQP
great an open source effort that was considered failed in 2008.
http://www.imatix.com/articles:whats-wrong-with-amqp/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=http://www.imatix.com/articles:whats-wrong-with-amqp/&k=wdHsQuqY0Mqq1fNjZGIYnA%3D%3D%0A&r=ci4D8otONlaL2hVZCpx3l04VZWct8XdbLYsnfUNUrTc%3D%0A&m=B%2F7Dv0Yw%2Fp8XG5zVufkVZZ6lJkpyItDJxzWmstazWLw%3D%0A&s=5fa92624f10631c29f3ff4ef0cb3455a605fafdb2bb3327b03bd464b76a78523>

So MQ Light an IBM product based on an open source developed product, MQTT an open source product based on an IBM developed product (a la Eclipse), oh don’t forget good old WMQe
wasn’t that the original MQ everywhere?

Seems the expression, “The bloom is off the rose.” applies
 way off.

Ian

The new client API is indeed AMQP based (I'm guessing you may have found Rob Nicholson's explanation here https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/2014/02/14/mq-light-wire-protocol/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/2014/02/14/mq-light-wire-protocol/&k=wdHsQuqY0Mqq1fNjZGIYnA%3D%3D%0A&r=ci4D8otONlaL2hVZCpx3l04VZWct8XdbLYsnfUNUrTc%3D%0A&m=B%2F7Dv0Yw%2Fp8XG5zVufkVZZ6lJkpyItDJxzWmstazWLw%3D%0A&s=eefd1352f5c8c5f168082a3d88e1dd4baece0fb46c640e04eb53b203f396a1aa> ) - I think the honest answer to both of those questions is that nothing is set in stone yet, but if those kinds of interoperability do come (and I don't have the crystal ball either) they probably won't be a high priority vs. getting an easy to use product and API out there in the short term - hence the current Alpha.

However, I'm not actually part of the team working on this directly - I'll encourage the folk who are to come and chip in (I know Rob is planning to) but in the meantime they're very keen to get any feedback and input - the forum here is probably a good way of getting in touch if you have more questions or thoughts:

Anthony Thanks.
I found that link but it didn’t seem to say what MQ Light was based on. Guessing it might be AMQP I did a google search and appears that’s what it is.

This was the first time I heard the term MQ Light so was interested to know what it was.

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian

MQLight is a number of things in the area of making messaging application development easier, particularly for newcomers - it's in open Alpha at the moment so the easiest way to find out more is to hit the website:

https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/&k=wdHsQuqY0Mqq1fNjZGIYnA%3D%3D%0A&r=ci4D8otONlaL2hVZCpx3l04VZWct8XdbLYsnfUNUrTc%3D%0A&m=B%2F7Dv0Yw%2Fp8XG5zVufkVZZ6lJkpyItDJxzWmstazWLw%3D%0A&s=8a50b80d3276fb7a2546819b0c63987e293e58f961daa74f0c60e6893131c130>

I believe the statement of intent is to the effect that the new API likely to be involved will be fully supported in MQ in the longer term.

Hope that helps

Thanks for forwarding that Roger.

There's some welcome improvements there, not least the ldap support (but still no Kerberos unfortunately).

Does anyone know what MQ Light is? This is mentioned in the statement of direction for future MQ releases. Seems to be following the same route as MQTT support on MQ? But looks like a completely new API.

No announced date yet for End of Life for MQ 7.0.0, 7.0.1, 7.1 or 7.5 on mid-tiers.

However MQ is an ”E” for Enhanced for the software policy type on the Software Lifecycle page
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/websphere/support/lifecycle/

“
a minimum of five full years of standard support from the date the product release was made generally available by IBM
”
“
To make planning easier, we endeavor to coordinate most EOS dates to occur on 30 April or 30 September
.”

MQ 7.0.0 was released June 2008
MQ 7.0.1 was released Sept 2009
MQ 7.1.0 was released Nov 2011
MQ 7.5.0 was released July 2012

For z/OS,7.0.0 EOL was 9-30-2011
No such thing as 7.5 for z/OS
7.0.1 and 7.1 same info as mid tier so far.

George,
I’m not saying your prediction for MQ Light is not ultimately going to come true, but I did notice that link you sent was written by the founder of *cough* zeroMQ, so read into that what you will.

This was the first time I heard the term MQ Light so was interested to know what it was.

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian

MQLight is a number of things in the area of making messaging application development easier, particularly for newcomers - it's in open Alpha at the moment so the easiest way to find out more is to hit the website:

https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/&k=wdHsQuqY0Mqq1fNjZGIYnA%3D%3D%0A&r=ci4D8otONlaL2hVZCpx3l04VZWct8XdbLYsnfUNUrTc%3D%0A&m=B%2F7Dv0Yw%2Fp8XG5zVufkVZZ6lJkpyItDJxzWmstazWLw%3D%0A&s=8a50b80d3276fb7a2546819b0c63987e293e58f961daa74f0c60e6893131c130>

I believe the statement of intent is to the effect that the new API likely to be involved will be fully supported in MQ in the longer term.

Hope that helps

Thanks for forwarding that Roger.

There's some welcome improvements there, not least the ldap support (but still no Kerberos unfortunately).

Does anyone know what MQ Light is? This is mentioned in the statement of direction for future MQ releases. Seems to be following the same route as MQTT support on MQ? But looks like a completely new API.

Hi All,

Lots of great discussion here. Just to clarify things a bit on MQLight.

MQ Light is currently a Beta, not a product. The naming gods have not been
invoked yet so you certainly should not read anything into the name.

IBM Messaging is segmented into 3 areas which you can see described here:
https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/

* Enterprise Messaging - The Enterprise MQ products you know and hopefully love.
* Mobile and M2M messaging - Yocused around MQTT, Internet of Things and Mobile.
* Application Messaging - Focused on developers building apps using ployglot
languages and runtimes on premise or in the cloud.

The MQ light runtime is intended to be simple and friendly for _developers_
to download and run and build apps against. Targeting the demographic of
programmers who expect to be up-and-coding within minutes using their
favourite language yet at the same time built on our solid base of the MQ
runtime.

Within Application Messaging, there is the MQ light runtime that you can
download from https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/ . As you have
noticed we have made a statement of direction w.r.t supporting the same API
in MQ and the MQ Light API is also supported by the ElasticMQ service in our
Bluemix open beta cloud platform based on Cloudfoundry.
https://ace.ng.bluemix.net/ .

All of these are based on the same MQ codebase, just packaged in different
ways. The intent being to allow those apps that were created by the
"download and run" developers to then be supported in production either
against an MQ infrastructure or in the cloud.

Turning to our use of AMQP 1.0. We wanted an open wire protocol with an
established open source community around it that was rich enough to
represent the features that we believe are important in enterprise
messaging. AMQP is a published OASIS standard which has those properties.
Note that we are using 1.0 not any of the earlier pre-standard versions.
Based on open source, we intend to rapidly create language bindings to a
wide range of popular languages. We started with Javascript/Node.js .

We'd be delighted if you would download the MQ light runtime or try out the
elastic MQ service in Bluemix (links above) and give us feedback on our
forum
https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/community/groups/service/html/communityview?communityUuid=00a6a6d0-9601-44cb-a2a2-b0b26811790a

Thanks.

Rob Nicholson.

Mark just posted the below link that shows MQ 7.0.* End of Life was announced a couple of weeks ago.

http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/cgi-bin/ssialias?subtype=ca&infotype=an&supplier=897&letternum=ENUS914-067

IBM needs to get the software support lifecycle page updated! I can understand it lagging a day or two behind, but it’s been over 2 weeks already.
I’m signed up for those technical bulletins from IBM on MQ and no word via that channel either
grrrr.

No announced date yet for End of Life for MQ 7.0.0, 7.0.1, 7.1 or 7.5 on mid-tiers.

However MQ is an ”E” for Enhanced for the software policy type on the Software Lifecycle page
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/websphere/support/lifecycle/

“
a minimum of five full years of standard support from the date the product release was made generally available by IBM
”
“
To make planning easier, we endeavor to coordinate most EOS dates to occur on 30 April or 30 September
.”

MQ 7.0.0 was released June 2008
MQ 7.0.1 was released Sept 2009
MQ 7.1.0 was released Nov 2011
MQ 7.5.0 was released July 2012

For z/OS,7.0.0 EOL was 9-30-2011
No such thing as 7.5 for z/OS
7.0.1 and 7.1 same info as mid tier so far.

George,
I’m not saying your prediction for MQ Light is not ultimately going to come true, but I did notice that link you sent was written by the founder of *cough* zeroMQ, so read into that what you will.

Really
MQ Light now! Based on AMQP
great an open source effort that was considered failed in 2008.

So MQ Light an IBM product based on an open source developed product, MQTT an open source product based on an IBM developed product (a la Eclipse), oh don’t forget good old WMQe
wasn’t that the original MQ everywhere?

Seems the expression, “The bloom is off the rose.” applies
 way off.

This was the first time I heard the term MQ Light so was interested to know what it was.

Thanks,
Ian

Hi Ian

MQLight is a number of things in the area of making messaging application development easier, particularly for newcomers - it's in open Alpha at the moment so the easiest way to find out more is to hit the website:

https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=https://www.ibmdw.net/messaging/mq-light/&k=wdHsQuqY0Mqq1fNjZGIYnA%3D%3D%0A&r=ci4D8otONlaL2hVZCpx3l04VZWct8XdbLYsnfUNUrTc%3D%0A&m=B%2F7Dv0Yw%2Fp8XG5zVufkVZZ6lJkpyItDJxzWmstazWLw%3D%0A&s=8a50b80d3276fb7a2546819b0c63987e293e58f961daa74f0c60e6893131c130>

I believe the statement of intent is to the effect that the new API likely to be involved will be fully supported in MQ in the longer term.

Hope that helps

Thanks for forwarding that Roger.

There's some welcome improvements there, not least the ldap support (but still no Kerberos unfortunately).

Does anyone know what MQ Light is? This is mentioned in the statement of direction for future MQ releases. Seems to be following the same route as MQTT support on MQ? But looks like a completely new API.
