Hi,

I've seen in the infoncenter version 7 for iseries(as400) show the channel stanza MQIBINDTYPE value in uppercase. It's different that unix and windows .

Does anybody know, if this stanza have to define in uppercase to work fine?

Thank you in advanced.

I’m afraid I can no longer look at the code to check but as I remember the channel values specified in the INI files are compared in a case insensitive manner so you you could specify “FASTPATH” or “fastpath” without any trouble....or indeed “FastPath” if you are feeling adventurous

Cheers,
Paul.

Here is one thing worth noting and mentioning again for ini attributes in the MQ distributed environments. There are ini attributes where MQ will take an incorrect value and promote it to the default value for that attribute with no error or warning reporting. So for an applicable attribute where the values are case sensitive and the default value was No, you can specify YES and be running with No, unwittingly.

Thanks,
Tim

Well that sounds particularly hazardous, can you think of any examples ? Those sound worth fixing in the product to me. As far as I recall the channel code tries to be as accommodating as it can be. However, if it does read something that looks wrong it would write out an ‘unexpected token’ message.

Cheers,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

I have not actually tested this, but just taking this comment below from the MQ manual at face value -> http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv7/v7r5/topic/com.ibm.mq.con.doc/q019040_.htm?resultof=%22%71%6d%2e%69%6e%69%22%20%22%53%53%4c%22%20%22%73%73%6c%22%20

I am assuming that if this approach was taken for the SSL Stanza ini attributes, it could have been applied to others, as well. In general, I find the documentation of the qm.ini attributes and how to update them not as exhaustive as they should be.
The SSL Stanza
Use the SSL stanza in the qm.ini file to configure how SSL or TLS channels on your queue manager attempts to use the following facilities, and how they react if problems occur when using them.
In each of the following cases, if the value supplied is not one of the valid values listed, then the default value is taken. No error messages are written mentioning that an invalid value is specified.

Thanks,
Tim

Well that does seem a little hazardous, I have no idea why they decided to do that. However, it’s not clear to me that it is exactly as you described or do you know for a fact that these values are case sensitive ?

I do not, and I also wasn't trying to say that those specific SSL ini values were case sensitive.

To clarify, when I said "for an applicable attribute where the values are case sensitive and the default value was No, you can specify YES and be running with No, unwittingly.", I was speaking more from a theoretical stand point, and not from a specific situation I had encountered. I apologize if that was misleading.

Even if those SSL Stanza attributes are not case sensitive, you still have a situation where OPTIONAL for the OCSPAuthentication variable could be misspelled and converted to REQUIRED, which is just as easy to do as mistaking the case sensitivity of an attribute. Also, I believe some attributes have case sensitive values and some do not, which makes it even more confusing for the administrator. If I remember correctly, I did post several months ago a feedback to the MQ manual asking for all the ini attributes/values to be thoroughly documented including if they are case sensitive or not and also if they promote invalid values to the default value.

Thanks,
Tim

Well that does seem a little hazardous, I have no idea why they decided to do that. However, it’s not clear to me that it is exactly as you described or do you know for a fact that these values are case sensitive ?

Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks,
Tim

Well that sounds particularly hazardous, can you think of any examples ? Those sound worth fixing in the product to me. As far as I recall the channel code tries to be as accommodating as it can be. However, if it does read something that looks wrong it would write out an ‘unexpected token’ message.

Cheers,

Thanks,

Hi,

I’ve seen in the infoncenter version 7 for iseries(as400) show the channel stanza MQIBINDTYPE value in uppercase. It’s different that unix and windows .

Does anybody know, if this stanza have to define in uppercase to work fine?

Thank you in advanced.

I’m confused with this topic, because I don’t have manner to know if the stanza work fine. In the infocenter 7.1 for example, in the seccion: “Other things to consider for distributed queue management” says:

Well, it must be close to 20 years since I wrote the code so I’m not sure I’d like to trust my memory but as far as I can recall the whole of the channels stanza is case insensitive. I can’t think what benefit making it case sensitive would have been so I’d like to think that usability took precedence.

Cheers,
Paul.

"I’m confused with this topic"

Unfortunately, that is also how I usually feel after reading the qm.ini attribute sections of the MQ manual. If it was me, I would open a Service Request with IBM and ask someone to give me a definitive answer on:

1. Are the Stanza, Attribute, and Values that I want to use case sensitive?
2. Do the attributes that I want to use promote invalid values to the default value?
3. Please provide a specific example on how they should be entered.

Until IBM clearly documents this behavior in the MQ manual (which I have submitted a feedback request for this to be done), it is confusing and unclear to the administrator for many ini attributes.

More importantly, MQ needs to provide a way for the distributed administrator to verify that the ini attributes (mqs.ini and qm.ini) that she/he entered are being correctly recognized by MQ. Art's RFE is requesting for this functionality. Hopefully, at least all distributed MQ administrators who are reading this e-mail and can vote are voting for it!

Art's RFE -> http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/execute?use_case=viewRfe&CR_ID=39555

Tim

I remember struggling with case sensitivity on a couple of the qm.ini attributes back in MQ 6.0. I don’t remember what they were, and maybe it’s been fixed in MQ 7. We just go with our standard qm.ini file as a template which has all that case stuff correct. Well, I think its correct. This thread makes me wonder, how do I really <know> that I’m running with Log Buffer Pages at 4096? I have it set in my qm.ini file, but I very well could be running with the default because it needs to be something like ‘LOGBufferPages=4096’ and not ‘LogBufferPages=4096’!

I have a somewhat related RFE asking for a way to query the QM via MQ Client while its running for a complete listing of all the attributes its running with. This would be another way to verify that the settings you intended in the qm.ini file are in fact what are being used by the QM.

I’m confused with this topic, because I don’t have manner to know if the stanza work fine. In the infocenter 7.1 for example, in the seccion: “Other things to consider for distributed queue management” says:

MQIBindType in the Channels stanza of the qm.ini or registry file. You can set this to FASTPATH or STANDARD and it is not case-sensitive. The default is STANDARD.

But what happen with the name of property? Is it not case-sensitive?

For iseries the property is defined with uppercase: http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv7/v7r1/topic/com.ibm.mq.doc/ia12390_.htm

MQIBINDTYPE=FASTPATH|STANDARD

And in general information is show mixt: http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/wmqv7/v7r1/topic/com.ibm.mq.doc/fa12610_.htm

MQIBindType=FASTPATH|STANDARD

Thank you

Here is one thing worth noting and mentioning again for ini attributes in the MQ distributed environments. There are ini attributes where MQ will take an incorrect value and promote it to the default value for that attribute with no error or warning reporting. So for an applicable attribute where the values are case sensitive and the default value was No, you can specify YES and be running with No, unwittingly.

Thanks,
Tim

I’m afraid I can no longer look at the code to check but as I remember the channel values specified in the INI files are compared in a case insensitive manner so you you could specify “FASTPATH” or “fastpath” without any trouble....or indeed “FastPath” if you are feeling adventurous [Smile]

Paul.

Hi,

I’ve seen in the infoncenter version 7 for iseries(as400) show the channel stanza MQIBINDTYPE value in uppercase. It’s different that unix and windows .

Does anybody know, if this stanza have to define in uppercase to work fine?

Thank you in advanced.
