IBM i (OS400) skipping MQCONN?

All,

I have someone telling me that their IBM i (OS400) application is not
connecting to the local queue manager on IBM i (skipping the MQCONN)
and is only doing an MQOPEN, MQGET and MQCLOSE.

I'm not very familiar with IBM i, is this possible?

Hi Roger,
Should not this be linked to the WMQ-CICS connection ?
I am not familiar with i Series but this rings a little bell in my brain.

Dominique

Hi,

> Should not this be linked to the WMQ-CICS connection ?

For CICS on z/OS, true. But this is just a
regular IBM i application running on IBM i
interacting with a local queue manager (no CICS).

Hi Roger,

If you look at the WebSphere MQ API Documentation you'll see the following statement in the MQCONN description.

On IBM® i, applications running in compatibility mode do not have to issue this call. These applications are connected automatically to the queue manager when they issue the first MQOPEN call. However, the MQCONN and MQDISC calls are still accepted from IBM i applications.

So, yes it is possible I believe,

Cheers,
Paul.

MQCONN call is not necessary in the CICS (z/OS) and the AS/400 (iSeries)
environments, it can be included for portability.

Yes, this is possible. Others have pointed to the doc.

However, personnaly, I do prefer an explicit connect in iSeries applications,
because you can have more than one queue manager on the same machine
and, although you can of course define one as default queue manager, I think
it is better not to have to rely on implicit defaults.

In a CICS, the connection is clearly identified in the configuration of the CICS
itself, so I feel that is not a problem.

Cheers,

Jantje.
